Picturesque Black Point, Exumas, Bahamas, is
the largest and most traditional native village in the northern
and central Exumas, located about 85 miles southeast of Nassau.
Its charm is that it's totally
off the
beaten tourism track, where visitors can truly "go native"
yet have all the amenities for a great vacation. The beaches are
incredible...stretches of white-pink powder sand...step out the
front door and enjoy breakfast on the beach under a palm tree...go
exploring to find the next incredible beach!
Uriah and Lorraine Rolle are the owners of Long Bay Cottages. Lorraine is a charming gal who also owns one of the village restaurants, Lorraine's Café. If you want a full meal plan, she'll gladly arrange it for you, and you'll also want to order a loaf of fabulous Bahamian bread from her mother. Lorraine's brothers are superb snorkeling and fishing guides. She can help you arrange to explore the many islands in the area by boat or take a day at nearby Staniel Cay, five miles away, where you can snorkel famous Thunderball Grotto where Thunderball, Never Say Never Again and Splash movies were filmed.
The first of five cottages is now ready for
rental, a charming, one-bedroom, one-bath, comfortable unit that
includes a kitchen and living/dining area. The bedroom has a queen
bed, while the living area has a queen sofa bed.
Visitors can either
fly to Black Point via Nassau or to Staniel Cay via flights from
Fort Lauderdale. Airport transfer is included in the rental. If
you arrive at Staniel Cay, you will enjoy a short boat ride to
neighboring Great Guana Cay, where the village of Black Point
is located.
While Black Point has not experienced a tourism "boom," yachtsmen have made it a favorite stop for years, enjoying the local friendly atmosphere and hospitality. A bulletin board in Lorraine's Café is one giant calling card.
Visitors will also enjoy a whimsical "Garden of Eden" created by one of the local residents, a collection of driftwood, shells and odds and ends to bring a smile to anyone viewing this masterpiece. There is a "blowhole" within walking distance of the cottages where sea spray whooshes through on the tide (above)...continue down the road to a fabulous ocean beach. The community has many colorful houses, along with a clinic, school, three churches, grocery and restaurants.
